Carlo Lio - Coppa | False Information

Carlo Lio's debut on Carl Cox's Intec Digital imprint makes for something of a mixed bag. The Toronto native has really crafted a name for himself of late, with 2009's 'Crispy' and his remix of Varoslav's 'Ghost Voyager' being particularly well received. This latest installment in what's becoming a fruitful career is typical of Lio's sound - albeit one that's at times slightly formulaic and unoriginal. By no means the most soulful or innovate track you'll hear this summer, opener 'False Information' is a worthy addition nonetheless, with a broody vibe that befits the producers reputation for hard edged techno.Deviating little in sound or structure throughout, and reminiscent of SCI +TEC's heavily filtered and 'heads down' techno, this effort at least promises to work on most dance floors. However, whether you'll remember it's inclusion amongst a host of other techno tracks is seriously doubtful. I want to like this track - it's just that I've heard it's type so many times before. 'Coppa' on the other hand, is far more indicative of Lio's production strengths. Muscular yet funky and edgy yet groovy, it easily trumps 'False Information' as the standout track here. On this occasion, Lio's penchant for straying down a less generic road is well represented, with the tracks latin flair complimented by a warm tech house beat.Tech house fans are sure to label this one a 'serious groover' - and I'd be inclined to agree. On the whole however, the EP is an adequate snapshot of where exactly Mr. Lio is going right....and where he's going wrong.
